In the coastal tropical forest, where Douala is located the climate is warm and humid year-round. The climate varies with terrain, from tropical along coast to semiarid and hot in north. Cameroon is currently disputing internationally over the delimitation of international boundaries in the vicinity of Lake Chad, the lack of which led to border incidents in the past, is complete and awaits ratification by Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria. Its disputing with Nigeria over land and maritime boundaries around the Bakasi Peninsula and Lake Chad is currently before the ICJ, as is a dispute with Equatorial Guinea over the exclusive maritime economic zone. There are 2,090 km of waterways of decreasing importance. French and English are the official languages, and there are about 270 African languages and dialects, including Pidgin, Fulfulda, and Eondo. Education is compulsory between ages 6 and 14. The terrain in the northern plains is rocky. In the central and western highlands, however, it is smooth and used for farming. In the south there are coastal tropical forests. Mt. Cameroon, 13,353 feet, in the southwest is the highest peak in West Africa and the sixth in Africa.
